By Bobby DeMuro

This week on the 7-Day Challenge Show Radio Exiles, we spoke with Dr. John Bartemus of Transcendent Lifestyle Center in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Dr. Bartemus laid down the law on all these suspicious weight loss and fitness gimmicks that are around nowadays, and gave us great guidelines for how to safely and effectively lose weight (and most importantly, keep it off!).

Not only that, but Dr. Bartemus (a proponent of keeping it simple, and basic living!) offered up a bunch of different tips – from fitness, to health, to nutrition and cooking – that can help you get fit, feel better, and lose weight without any sort of gimmicks or weird products.

Finally, he touched on a topic of huge importance; goal-setting. We talked about how to set reasonable, manageable goals that can be attained, but are neither too easy or too hard so as the person setting the goal gives up after a short period of time.

Hot Hydration: Getting Your 60 oz Without Ice Water

Share |

By Kelly Pasour Davis

I don’t know about you, but for me the winter months are the most difficult time for staying hydrated. Cold water does not appeal to me when it is cold outside, so it’s difficult to remember to hydrate, even though I know I should.

However, I have found a way to drink eight ounces of water as soon as I wake up in the morning, when my body temperature is at its lowest. As soon as I rise, I turn on my teapot, slice a lemon, make myself a cup of hot water with lemon to sip. It is warming, refreshing, and best of all – hydrating.

Sipping hot lemon water isn’t anything new. People have been touting the benefits of this particular combination for years. Some of the healthful claims worth noting include:

- Aids with digestion. Lemon juice helps your bowels eliminate waste more efficiently and acts as a laxative.

- Promotes throat health. The antibacterial properties help fight infection.

- May control blood pressure. This is due to lemon’s high potassium content.

- Promotes immunity. This is also attributable to potassium.

- Helps ward off minor illnesses like colds.

- Can relieve hiccups.

- Promotes respiratory health. This combination breaks up phlegm and may ease coughing.

Regardless of these health claims, sipping hot water with lemon is one of many ways to stay hydrated, especially during winter months when ice water may not be on your to-do list. I have found that this particular strategy works well for me and my hydration needs. It is important to your health to develop the daily habits that work best for you in achieving sufficient daily hydration, and if this is something that helps you get a few more ounces of water early in the day, then go for it!

So go ahead and try it for a few days. I can’t promise that you will not get a cold or your hiccups will go away, but you will be one step further to being hydrated and being healthy.
