Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
Because Bobby DeMuro is a very charismatic guy who gets people, including me, excited about exercise!!

What do you hope to get out of it?
I want to help raise awareness that a simple hour-long walk a day can change your life, your attitude, and your waistline!

What’s your strategy to win?
I’m putting treadmills in the newsroom, the studio, home and under my desk at WBTV!

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
Start simple! Having too big of a goal can cause burnout, and disappointment. If you have big dreams, that’s great! But keep the challenge you’re putting your body through to one it can handle. Build consistently towards that goal!

Why should followers support you and NoFizzUSA during the event?
I believe that grassroots efforts grow into mammoth movements, just like NoFizzUSA did… people were passionate about changing the future! If our “Walk the Walk” competition prevents one child from the health risks childhood obesity presents, then every step will have been worth it!

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
To promote health, raise awareness, to hopefully inspire someone else in the process, and to get healthier myself.

What do you hope to get out of it?
Increased health, and establishing a more consistent exercise routine that includes more walking!

What’s your strategy to win?
Walk as much as possible! If it gets down to the final week of the contest and I think I’m falling behind, I may end up walking 11 miles to work. Just kidding… Kind of.

What’s your advice for people becoming more active?
The only person who can make healthy choices for you – is YOU! Fit feels great. Give it a chance – and take it one day at a time. Don’t set unrealistic goals. Don’t beat yourself up if you have a “bad” day, but do something positive!

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
NoFizzUSA is a great organization that’s educating the Charlotte community – and beyond – one bottle of water and one pedometer at a time. And you should pledge your support to me… because who else in the competition has a nickname like MOFO? :)

MEET BOBBY
Bobby is the Founder of NoFizz America, and a personal trainer, strength coach, journalist, and graduate school student.

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
Well, I sort of came up with it… But seriously, it’s a great way to prove to people that being healthy doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to be a drag – it can be fun, simple, easy, and fully integrated into your day.

What do you hope to get out of it?
Not only do I hope to win by 100,000 steps (OK, maybe not…), I really hope to show others that it’s really, really easy to integrate fitness into your life. Small changes can go a very long way when you prioritize them into your life, and this is one example of that.

What’s your strategy to win?
Walk a lot! Walk, run, whatever. If I go to sporting events this month, walk around the stadium more than sitting in my seat, for example. Find little ways to add a little bit of activity to every day, and make sure I beat Mike McBride handily.

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
Just what I mentioned above – start slow. Running marathons, and doing obstacle course races, and playing four hours of tennis are all great goals, but you don’t need to do that much to be a healthy person – especially if you’re just getting started. Start slowly, make it consistent and sustainable, and when you’ve found a good bit of success, try to add small goals on top of it.

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
I’m pretty clearly biased, but we do some pretty amazing stuff! We hold outreach programs at schools, community centers, and with other young people about the importance of physical fitness and nutrition education. We want to use any and all money raised from this event to buy pedometers for every single student at our outreach programs this fall – and beyond!

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
To take my fitness efforts to a new level – time to up the intensity and focus just a little bit.

What do you hope to get out of it?
To lose my last 6-8 lbs. Since September 2010, I have lost 78 lbs. by working out and changing my eating habits (gave up processed and fast foods, as well as soft drinks – NoFizz for life!). The last few pounds are stubborn and holding on for dear life, and I’m more than ready to knock them out!

What’s your strategy to win?
I can’t spill my secrets! Mostly, I will keep moving, and likely add another 30 minutes at the gym to make sure I get my steps and stay ahead of everybody else!

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
Get a pedometer! Maybe I just have a Monk-ish OCD, but when I wear my pedometer, it really keeps me on my toes. Just parking further out at the grocery store, taking the stairs or walking to your co-worker’s office to talk instead of sending that email — it’s the little things that add up.

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
With just a couple of dollars, you can change someone’s life! One of NoFizzUSA’s challenges was the first step in my journey to get healthy; my life was changed for the better from seeing just one Tweet. Let’s give Bobby and company funds to spread the word across the country!

MEET KIM

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
I am taking the challenge because I rarely to never turn down a challenge but most importantly, as I am embarking on the journey to better health personally, I hope to inspire people to take the journey with me. Cheesy and generic? Maybe. But it is the absolute truth!

What do you hope to get out of it?
I hope to create even stronger connections with my fellow social media and media standouts, get healthier and get as many people joining us on the health train as possible! It’s time to make being healthy and active ‘cool.’

What’s your strategy to win?
Win? Totally… I am in it to win it, baby! My strategy is to walk and work-out a whole lot and ‘out-step’ the competition. Ladies, if anyone has suggestions about a fashionable way I can rock the pedometer at all times, in all environments and at all events, please let me know!

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
The motivation and determination has to come from within, and you have to be ready to make a change in your health. Don’t beat yourself up or give up if you slip up. This is an investment in your own future and well-being and you deserve the best of everything! I have come a long way but I have a long way to go, and a lot to lose, but I guarantee you that if you commit and ease into the process as a lifestyle change, you will feel better than you ever thought you could and have energy and confidence that you never believed you could achieve!

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
People should support NoFizzUSA because the mission is basic, but the results and the positive changes that participants lives will encounter are monumental. Drinking soda, even diet soda, and sugary drinks wreck our bodies; children are growing up drinking these drinks like water. It is time to stop the cycle and educate people about the toxins that we are dumping into our bodies each day. Your donation will better the health of our country and will aid in helping people become more health-conscious and feeling well!

MEET BROOKS
Brooks, who refers to himself as “The Otter,” (we’re not really sure why, either) is the man over at Tenders Fresh Food in Cornelius, NC.

Follow him on: Twitter | Facebook | Tenders Fresh Food

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
I’m taking the challenge for four reasons: To help show others that tracking results will motivate them to take the action necessary to make positive changes in their lives; to have fun and compete with other local leaders; I want to track my results to help motivate me and meet my own personal fitness goals; and, Bobby said that I’d find flaming bags on my doorstep every night if I didn’t participate.

What do you hope to get out of it?
Again, a few primary objectives: Lose seven (7) pounds during the initiative and lower my BMI 1.5%; meet 10 children that replace an hour of inactivity with physical exercise every single day; bragging rights upon victory!

What’s your strategy to win?
I anticipate on learning how to sleepwalk, water-proofing a pedometer so that I can swim with it, and making a conscious effort to walk and exercise 1.5 hours more a day.

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
Stop waiting around and do something! If you truly want to make a change in your life then embrace speed of implemention. In other words, once you have an idea and know what you intend on accomplishing; take massive action! Make constant progress and don’t worry about the details. You don’t even have to know me, but I promise I will serve as your accountability partner (holding you to what you say you’re going to do) if you want to make a significant change in your life.

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
NoFizzUSA is a great organization to support because they truly care about the community that they serve and I really appreciate about their non-existence of bureaucracy. In essence, every penny that is donated goes right back into causes that make a difference in people’s lives. Furthermore, I’d be insanely grateful if anyone is willing to support me. I’ll make you a meal in my chicken joint as a small token of my appreciation, which would accompanied by numerous high fives and hugs. Ah, what the heck? We can even make a secret handshake together.

MEET BRIAN
Brian is the Director of Community Partnerships for Mecklenburg County, NC

Why are you taking the Walk The Walk Challenge?
I am participating to raise awareness for the need that we have as a society to move more. I have a degenerative knee injury from years of playing hard court tennis, but I want to show that there are no excuses when it comes to taking part in even a simple sort of a physical fitness plan. Moving more helps me feel better, and I want to be a good example for others and, hopefully, help others have a better quality of life.

What do you hope to get out of it?
I hope to get additional motivation to stretch myself and move even more by participating in this challenge. I also think it will be fun!

What’s your strategy to win?
My strategy to win is to play as much tennis as possible given my knee injury, and make sure I am having fun while I do it!

What’s your advice for people trying to get more active?
My advice for people who want to get more active in their lives is to try lots of different things until you find some things you truly enjoy — and then go do it. I rarely go inside a gym. I have found activities I really like to do that are outside, and I do them as much as possible. Plus, I always feel better afterward.

Why should followers donate to NoFizzUSA and pledge to support you during the event?
This organization really is helping people change their behaviors. Obviously, changing behaviors is the only way that we can turn the tide on this overwhelming problem of obesity facing our nation. That is why people should donate to NoFizzUSA – they offer a realistic solution to a serious problem.

[RADIO]: Weight Loss and Goal Setting with Dr. John Bartemus

By Bobby DeMuro

This week on the 7-Day Challenge Show Radio Exiles, we spoke with Dr. John Bartemus of Transcendent Lifestyle Center in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Dr. Bartemus laid down the law on all these suspicious weight loss and fitness gimmicks that are around nowadays, and gave us great guidelines for how to safely and effectively lose weight (and most importantly, keep it off!).

Not only that, but Dr. Bartemus (a proponent of keeping it simple, and basic living!) offered up a bunch of different tips – from fitness, to health, to nutrition and cooking – that can help you get fit, feel better, and lose weight without any sort of gimmicks or weird products.

Click here to listen to the show.

Finally, he touched on a topic of huge importance; goal-setting. We talked about how to set reasonable, manageable goals that can be attained, but are neither too easy or too hard so as the person setting the goal gives up after a short period of time.

Tune in to hear what we challenge you to do this week!

You can find out more about Dr. Bartemus and his many medical and academic accomplishments by visiting the Transcendent Lifestyle website, or by visiting his office in the Cornelius, North Carolina area near Lake Norman.

Thanks for being a guest, Dr. Bartemus!
